POSITION STATEMENT

Chiropractic is the most divided profession of any kind that I know of. This division is just one of the myriad ways it
resembles religions and cults. What can one expect when the founder himself, D.D. Palmer, considered his creation a
religion? It has been described as a biotheological cult, and I can't think of a better description. "The Big Idea" is where
it's at. If you don't understand IT, you can't understand chiropracTIC.

Chiropractic is to science, what Scientology is to religion. It is just as much a pseudoscience, as Scientology is a
pseudoreligion.

There's more . . .

===============================================================================================

DISCLAIMER

My criticism is not directed at ethical, reformist chiroprac
TORs. It is primarily directed at the profession itself, IOW at
chiroprac
TIC, that keeps producing and protecting the "real" chiropractors who are traditional, "straight" and
"subluxation-based". They are like dinosaurs, who should have been extinct a long time ago, but are still being educated
in even the largest chiropractic schools. Many of the newer and younger chiropractors are even worse than their
forefathers.

I do not hold the extreme views of certain chiro skeptics, who seem to consider all DCs as crooks, and manipulation as
having no value at all, etc. While their criticism is often correct, I believe that they go too far and thus impede the efforts
of reformers. It's not that black and white an issue, and is often based on a lack of understanding of physical medicine.

If you have a problem in need of health care, seek a qualified professional, usually starting with your MD. Above all, keep
a skeptical attitude toward all claims that seem too good to be true. They usually are!

Chirobase is without doubt the best & largest collection of information and articles that expose
the myriad problems in chiropractic, and that advocate the use of scientific-based practices by
     chiropractors.

"Accurate information about chiropractic is not easy to get. Most publishers, editors, and

HCRC FAQ Sheet: Chiropractic - Steven Novella, MD
"The primary difficulty with chiropractic is that it maintains itself as a separate philosophy of
medicine outside of mainstream scientific medicine. Chiropractic organizations claim that this
separation is due to the fact that they have been been rejected by the healthcare mainstream, but
it is they who reject the scientific module of medicine which has been so successful in the century
since the founding of their discipline. Only a small percentage of chiropractors have openly rejected
the pseudoscientific ideas of their peers, such as Innate Intelligence, and have endorsed scientific
principles, as well as appropriate medical ethics of restraint."

•
Chiropractic - Steven Novella, MD
"Chiropractic is the most widespread form of "alternative" health care in the United States.
Chiropractors are licensed in every state, with about 50,000 practitioners and an estimated 24
million office visits annually. Their success is largely due to their aggressive public relations and
political lobbying. After a hundred years of existence, however, they remain outside of mainstream
scientific medicine. Their status as alternative is not due to the protectionism of which chiropractors
so often accuse their detractors, but rather to their persistent links to pseudoscientific concepts,
     anti-science attitudes, and unethical practices."

•
Chiropractic: A Skeptical View - William T. Jarvis, Ph.D.
"Chiropractic is the most significant nonscientific health-care delivery system in the United States.
As a result of their high level of organization and aggressiveness, chiropractors are licensed to
practice in all 50 states and several foreign countries. Although a minority of chiropractors offer
rational treatment, chiropractic's cultism is so well entrenched that the profession should be viewed
as a societal problem, not simply as a competitor of regular health-care.

Daniel David Palmer - Wikipedia

•
A Brief History of Chiropractic's Discovery - Chiropractic's founder, Daniel David Palmer (1910)
I am the originator, the Fountain Head of the essential principle that disease is the result of too much or not enough
functionating. I created the art of adjusting vertebrae, using the spinous and transverse processes as levers, and
named the mental act of accumulating knowledge, the cumulative function, corresponding to the physical vegetative
function -- growth of intellectual and physical -- together, with the science, art and philosophy -- Chiropractic. It is now
being followed, more or less, by 2,000 Chiropractors, and its use is being attempted by several other methods. It was I
who combined the science and art and developed the principles thereof. I have answered the time-worn question --
    what is life?

•
D.D. Palmer's Religion of Chiropractic - D.D. Palmer letter, May 4, 1911
I occupy in chiropractic a similar position as did Mrs. Eddy in Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy claimed to receive her
ideas from the other world and so do I. She founded theron a religioin, so may I. I am THE ONLY ONE IN
     CHIROPRACTIC WHO CAN DO SO. . . . .

You ask, what I think will be the
final outcome of our law getting. It will be that we will have to build a boat similar to
Christian Science and hoist a religious flag. I have received chiropractic from the other world, similar as did Mrs. Eddy.
No other one has lad claim to that,
NOT EVEN B.J.

Exemption clauses instead of chiro laws by all means, and LET THAT EXEMPTION BE
THE RIGHT TO PRACTICE
OUR RELIGION. But we must have a religious head, one who is the founder, as did Christ, Mohamed, Jo. Smith, Mrs.
Eddy, Martin Luther and other who have founded religions. I am the fountain head. I am the founder of chiropractic in
its science, in its art, in its philosophy and in its religious phase. Now, if chiorpractors desire to claim me as their head,
their leader, the way is clear. My writings have been gradually steering in that direction until now it is time to assume
that we have the same right to as has Christian Scientists.

Oregon is free to Chiropractors. California gives Chiropractors only one chance, that of practicing our religion.

The protective policy of the U.C.A. is O.K., but that of religion is far better. The latter can only be assumed by having
a leader, a head, a person who has received chiropractic as a science, as an art, as a philosophy and as a religion.

Do you catch on?

The policy of the U.C.A. is the best that B.J. can be at the head of, BUT THE RELIGIOUS MOVE IS FAR BETTER, but
we must incorporate under the man who received the principles of chiropractic from the other world, who wrote the
book of all chiropractic books, who today has much new matter, valuable, which is not contained in that book.

If you will watch my book closely as you read, you will find it has a religion contained in it, altho I do not so name it.

If either of the Davenport schools would take advantage of practicing our
religion founded by D.D. Palmer, it will make
the way of chiropractic as easy as it was for the S.C.'s.

I have given you some special hints on the question which is uppermost in your mind, will you please give it
consideration -- never mind if it is new.

     Truly,
(Signed) D.D. Palmer.   (all emphasis original - PL)

• Biographical Sketch: Samuel Homola, DC
Samuel Homola, DC, is a second-generation chiropractor who has dedicated himself to defining the
proper limits on chiropractic and to educating consumers and professionals about the field. His
1963 book Bonesetting, Chiropractic, and Cultism supported the appropriate use of spinal
manipulation but renounced chiropractic dogma. His 1999 book Inside Chiropractic: A Patient's
Guide provides an incisive look at chiropractic's history, benefits, and shortcomings. Now retired
after 43 years of practice, he lives in Panama City, Florida, with his wife, Martha.

Activator Methods (AM) - Samuel Homola, DC
Activator Methods thus piles one dubious concept upon another. Its leg-length tests have not
been demonstrated to be reliable or to yield significant data. Nor is there any reason to believe
that "pelvic deficiency" or its associated "subluxations" are pathologic conditions. Despite this,
many AM practitioners tell their patients that use of an Activator mallet is a "state of the art"
procedure that replaces the "old" method of manual spinal manipulation. Nothing could be
     further from the truth.

the problem of chiropractic, and has drawn the only conclusions possible after a consideration of all

present-day medical science, along with analyses, conclusions, and speculation regarding its status
     and its future.

Chiropractic: Does the Bad Outweigh the Good? - Samuel Homola, DC
Many people go to chiropractors for relief of back pain. But there is reason for caution. Much of
what chiropractors do is nonsense, and they often misinform their patients.

•
Finding A Good Chiropractor - Samuel Homola, DC
Spinal manipulation provided by chiropractors is often beneficial in the treatment of some types of
back pain. Since some chiropractors use spinal manipulation to treat visceral disease and back
pain, medical practitioners may have to be cautious and selective in referring patients with back pain
to chiropractors. This commentary will help family physicians determine when it might be
appropriate to seek the services of a chiropractor in the treatment of back pain. Arch Fam Med.

How Chiropractic Subluxation Theory Threatens Public Health - Samuel Homola, DC
Many chiropractors treat patients with spinal adjustments based on the theory that correction of
vertebral subluxations will restore and maintain health. This article explores the controversy
surrounding the practice of chiropractic and discusses some of the dangers associated with
inappropriate use of spinal manipulation. The management of infants and children by subluxation-
based chiropractors who do not endorse such medically accepted procedures as immunization or
use of antibiotics is especially a cause for alarm. If the chiropractic profession fails to abandon the
false premise upon which it is based, it will remain controversial and some aspects of chiropractic
treatment will continue to be a threat to public health.

Inside Chiropractic: A Patient's Guide (1999) -- Samuel Homola, DC

Placebos, Nocebos, and Chiropractic Adjustments - Samuel Homola, DC

• Pseudoscience and Antiscience in Alternative Medicine - Raso & Homola
All manner of voodooism, hocus-pocus, mumbo-jumbo, and whimsicality may intrude on science-
oriented healthcare, but the only modes of alternative medicine that have any chance of becoming
biomedical are those that not (or are not invariably) mystical, supernaturalistic, and/or vitalistic.
Although some alt-med methods may (necessarily through scientific research) become (or become
the basis for) parts of biomedicine, alternative medicine's track record in this regard has been
     dismal.

•
Surface Electromyography (SEMG) - Samuel Homola, DC
In 2000, after reviewing more than 2,500 original articles, reviews, and book, an American

for diagnosing low back pin or neuromuscular disease. For these reasons, routine chiropractic use
of SEMG should be regarded as a money-making scheme.

What a Rational Chiropractor Can Do for You - Samuel Homola, DC
Science-based chiropractors make appropriate judgments about the nature of their patients'
problems, determine whether these problems lie within their scope, and make appropriate referrals
for problems that do not. If you can find one who uses manipulation and physical therapy
appropriately and who is willing to coordinate with your personal physician, you can benefit from
the best that both have to offer.

•
The Webster Technique: An Offshoot of Chiropractic Pediatrics - Samuel Homola, DC
Many chiropractors are "adjusting" the spines of pregnant women to "assure normal delivery" and to
prevent breech birth caused by "intrauterine constraint." This dubious treatment -- known as the
Webster Technique -- is based on the equally dubious theory that vertebral subluxations can cause
malfunction in the uterus by putting pressure on spinal nerves.

•
Joseph C. Keating, Jr., Ph.D., chiropractic historian
These documents are some of the data files written by Joseph C. Keating, Jr., Ph.D. as information
references for developing his many published articles and books. An extremely valuable source of
     historical information.

This link is included in this skeptical section, not because Dr. Keating is an open chiroskeptic,
but because any study of chiropractic history will provide plenty of self-incriminating information
right "from the horse's mouth". One need not search very long to find plenty of skeletons in the
chiro closet - skeletons that are still upheld by many chiros. Some of the most basic nonsensical
and unscientific ideas from 108 years ago are still being preached from chiro pulpits.

•
It Works, It Works, It Works! - Keating & Bergmann
Will Mr. McAndrews' warning against unsubstantiated claims be heard in chiropractic? Perhaps not so long as a
majority of chiropractors continue to perceive "philosophy" (and marketing) as defensive crutches against the historic
assault by organized medicine, and as substitutes for hard core scientific information. The anti-scientific traditions in
the profession are very strong, and although blatant anti-competitive activities by AMA et al. have been ruled illegal,
criticism of the chiropractic profession (and posting of killer subluxation advertisements on hospital bulletin boards)
are clearly within the free speech prerogatives of any would-be critics. The more we stretch the available scientific
data to support "what we always knew was true," the more we can expect to be held up to ridicule. The chiropractic
profession dearly needs an attitude adjustment.
